BOKU's research and education focus is on the conservation and development of protection for habitats, economy and living standards, the management of natural resources and environment, and the protection of food and health.

BOKU offers 8 BSc and 28 MSc programs, with most allowing for specializations and possibilities for majors.  The language of instruction is both German and English, where many MSc programs are only in English.

With 15 departments, studies at BOKU are in the fields of natural resources management, life sciences and biotechnology, civil and environmental engineering, landscape planning, agriculture, forestry, and winemaking.
