FSC is a single-attribute third-party certification program managed by the US Forest Stewardship Council with its focus on forests and forestry products. The goal of the FSC program is to promote responsible forestry and certify the resulting wood products.
The Forest Stewardship Council manages the standards. They vary for different forest products – FSC pure, FSC mixed, and FSC recycled – and different regions.
The FSC program uses a specific, prescriptive approach. Certification follows the path of the wood product, from forest to consumer, and is awarded by such third parties as the Rainforest Alliance and Scientific Certification Systems.
